You left the studio feeling excited, and now you're standing in front of your bathroom mirror wondering what on earth just happened to your face. Maybe the lashes feel heavier than you expected. Maybe they look nothing like the soft, natural photo you sent as inspiration. Maybe you're just staring, unsure if you love them or if you're about to cry. If any of that sounds familiar, take a breath. You are not stuck, and you are not the first person to feel this way.
Take a Deep Breath: Assessing Your Lash Panic
So many of my clients have this exact reaction the first time they see dramatic lash extensions on their own face. It makes sense. Your eyes have looked the same way for your entire life, and suddenly there's more length, more curl, more everything staring back at you. That shock alone can feel like regret, even when the set is actually beautiful and well done.
Here's what I always tell people in my chair: there's a real difference between an adjustment period and an actual bad application. An adjustment period feels like unfamiliarity. The lashes feel present, maybe a little heavy at first, but they're not poking you, not pulling on your natural lashes, and not falling into your eyes. A bad application feels wrong in your body, not just your eyes. Think irritation, lashes crossing or clumping, or a shape that genuinely doesn't sit right no matter how many times you blink.
If you're on the fence, give it 24 to 48 hours before you panic. Lash extensions often settle a bit as the adhesive fully cures and you get used to the new weight and length. What feels overwhelming on day one sometimes feels completely natural by day three. That said, if something feels physically uncomfortable or you're in genuine pain, that's not a wait it out situation, and I'll talk about what to do about that shortly.
Common Reasons Why You Might Dislike Your New Lashes
Over the years in the chair, I've noticed the complaints tend to fall into a few honest categories.
- They feel too heavy or stiff. This usually means the diameter or length was too much for your natural lash to comfortably support, or your lids just need a day to adjust to any set of extensions.
- The curl or mapping doesn't flatter your eye shape. A dramatic curl that looks stunning on a hooded eye can look completely different on a downturned or almond eye. Mapping is not one size fits all, and when it's off, you notice it immediately.
- Volume overload. This is the one I see most often. A client asks for something natural, gets shown a photo of
